Alyxia paniensis is a newly described species, endemic to New Caledonia, restricted to the northeastern part of Grande Terre. It is known from Mont Colnett to Mont Panié. It is found in dense humid forest between 400 and 1,200 m asl on volcano-sedimentary substrates. The invasive species (Rusa Deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs) constitute a potential threat to the habitat quality. However, the population size does not seem to be in decline at the moment. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 16 km² and 106 km², and with three locations, A. paniensis is therefore precautionarily considered Endangered (EN) B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with a decline in habitat quality.

Geographical area

Alyxia paniensis is endemic to New Caledonia where it is known from three subpopulations (Colnett, Ignambi and Mont Panié) restricted to the north east of Grande Terre.

Population

The population size is not known.

Habitat

Alyxia paniensis is found in dense humid forest between 400 and 1,200 m asl. on volcano-sedimentary substrate.

Threats

The invasive species (Rusa deer and feral pigs) constitute a potential threat on the habitat quality. However the population size does not seem to decline at the moment.

Conservation

Alyxia paniensis is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in one protected area: Mont Panié. It is recommended to realise field prospections and collect and photograph the species for a better knownledge of the species.
