Endangered (EN) , assessed in 24/10/2017

Phyllanthus cornutus is a shrub endemic to New Caledonia, only known from 2 localities on Ile des Pins. It occurs in humid forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are both equal to 8 km². Main identified threats include habitat degradation by uncontrolled bushfires and invasive species (Pinus caribea). This species is therefore listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area

P. cornutus is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is only known from 2 localities on Ile des Pins: Pic N'Ga and le Plateau.

Population

Two subpopulations have been identified (Pic N'Ga and Plateau), but total population size is not known.

Habitat

P. cornutus occurs in shrubland and forest on ultramafic substrate up to 200 m asl.

Threats

The main identified threat is habitat degradation by uncontrolled bushfires and invasive species (mostly Pinus caribea).

Conservation

P. cornutus is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and doesn't occur in any protected areas. It is recommended to look for this species on the plateau in forest remnants. This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed that monitoring should occur to ensure the persistence of the known population. To ensure the preservation of a viable population, it is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services) and local Management Committee on the presence of the species in the concerned areas, and a protected area should be established in Pic N'Ga.
