Description
Phyllanthus ouveanus is a shrub of 0.5-2 m high, endemic of New Caledonia. It is only known from Loyalty islands (Maré, Lifou, Tiga and Ouvéa). This species grows in undergrowth forests on calcareous substrates and in rocky areas of littoral backwards up to 20 m asl. This species is also seen in dolines at Maré and Lifou. (Butaud, 2014). This species is common and does not seem threatened. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 5,711 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 60 km², P. ouveanus is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Phyllanthus ouveanus is endemic to New Caledonia where it is only known from Loyalty islands (Maré, Lifou, Tiga and Ouvéa).
Population
Population size is not known but based on field observations it is a common species.
Habitat
Phyllanthus ouveanus grows in undergrowth forests on calcareous substrates and in rocky areas of littoral backwards up to 20 m asl. This species is also seen in dolines at Maré and Lifou. (Butaud, 2014).
Threats
Phyllanthus ouveanus does not seem threatened.
Conservation
Phyllanthus ouveanus is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it does not occur in any protected areas.
