Description
Phyllanthus sylvincola is a sub-shrub or shrub of 0.5-3 m high, endemic of New Caledonia and restricted to the south east of Grande Terre, from Ouinné bay to Thio Plateau. This species occurs in maquis on ultramafic substrates at an altitude range of 20 and 600 m asl. The main identified threats are linked to habitat damage by uncontrolled bushfires and mining activities at Thio Plateau and Ouinné. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated to be of 332 km² and 32 km² while the number of locations is estimated to be 7. Phyllanthus sylvincola is therefore assessed as Vulnerable (VU) B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v), with an estimated decline of all the subcriteria concerned.
Geographical area
Phyllanthus sylvincola is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the south east of Grande Terre, from Ouinné bay to Thio Plateau.

Conservation
Phyllanthus genus is protected by legislation in Province Nord. Phyllanthus sylvincola does occur in one protected area: Côte Oubliée. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services) resposible for the coordination of the firefighing efort on the presence of the species in the concerned areas. It is moreover suggested to realise field surveys in the south east massifs in order to better estimated its distribution range and its population size.
