Gastrolepis austrocaledonica is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia spread on Grande Terre from Moneo in the north to Prony in the south. Gastrolepis austrocaledonica occurs in forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 5-1,000 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Gastrolepis austrocaledonica is considered Least Concern (LC).

Population size is unknown.

Habitat


Gastrolepis austrocaledonica occurs in forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 5- 1,000 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities: Pinpin (NMC), Goro (VALE).

Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in several protected areas : Montagne des sources, Vallée de la Thy, Foret Nord, Rivière bleue, Pic du grand Kaori, Forêt de Saille, Massif du Kouakoué, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Mont Do, Barrage de Yaté
