Cryptocarya sp.nov. Mcpherson 4408 is an endemic big tree from New Caledonia. It is known from three distant subpopulations : Forêt Nord, Aoupinié, Montagne des sources. It occurs in dense humid forests on ultramafic and non ultramafic substrate at an altitude range of 10-620 m asl. The main threats are mainly linked to frequent bushfires. Some subpopulations can also be impacted by mining activities at Goro. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated to be of 2,000 km² and 24 km² while the number of locations is estimated to be three. Therefore, Cryptocarya sp.nov. Mcpherson 4408 is assessed as Endangered (EN) B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v), with an estimated continuing decline of the concerned sub-criteria.

Conservation

This new species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected area. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services) on the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
