Red List Status -

Endangered (EN) , assessed in 20/07/2022

Geijera tartarea is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia restricted to the northwestern coast of Grande Terre. It occurs in open scrubland (maquis) on serpentine substrates up to 300 m asl. The main identified threats are linked to habitat damage by uncontrolled bushfires. The Vavouto location is also impacted by urbanisation (road construction, house construction, soil erosion). The species can also be impacted by Rusa Deer (Rusa timorensis) causing fraying scars when they rub their antlers on the trunk. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated to be 317 km² and 24 km², respectively, while the number of locations is estimated to be five. Using criterion B and with continuous declines in its habitat quality, AOO and number of mature individuals, G. tartarea is assessed as Endangered (EN) B1ab(ii,iii,v)+2ab(ii,iii,v).
