Periomphale balansae is an endemic small tree of New Caledonia widespread on Grande Terre from Ouégoa in the north to Yaté in the south. Periomphale balansae occurs in dense humid forest on various substrates at an altitudinal range 150-1,360 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Periomphale balansae has a high phylogenetic importance as it is part of the family Alseuosmiaceae which gathers 6 species worldwide. Periomphale balansae is considered Least Concern (LC).

Habitat

Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities: Goro (VALE), Kouaoua (SLN), Camp des sapins (SLN).
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species is present in several protected areas : Mont Do, Haute Yaté, Vallée de la Thy, Mont Panié, Mont Mou, Nodela, Rivière bleue, Mont Humboldt, la Dumbéa, Haute Pourina, Forêt de Saille, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Haute Dumbéa, Massif du Kouakoué, Pic du Pin, Aoupinié, Pic Ningua, Montagne des sources, Foret Nord Periomphale balansae would deserve to be protected because it has a high phylogenetic importance as it is part of the family Alseuosmiaceae which gathers 6 species worldwide.
