Notelaea monticola is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia where it has a scattered distribution in the southern part of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate above 850 m asl. The main impacts identified come from mining activities, both directly and indirectly (road construction and urbanization) and by bushfires (Montagne des Sources, Mont Pénari). Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated estimated to be 108 and 4,612 km²,respectively , while the number of locations close to 10. Notelaea monticola is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(ii,iii,v)+2ab(ii,iii,v) with an estimated decline of all the concerned subcriteria.

Conservation

Notelaea monticola is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in numerous protected areas: Montagne des sources, Massif du Kouakoué, Mont Humboldt, Mont Mou, Côte Oubliée, Haute Yaté, Forêt de Saille, Vallée de la Thy, Rivière bleue.
