Styphelia macrocarpa is a common shrub or small tree, endemic to New Caledonia, where it is largely distributed across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest and scrubland from 150 to 1,300 m asl. This species has two varieties, but knowledge is insufficient to carry out individual assessments. The extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) of the species are estimated at 5,725 and 120 km². Therefore, S. macrocarpa is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area

S. macrocarpa is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed across Grande Terre.

Population

Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate the species is locally abundant.

Habitat

It occurs in dense humid forest and scrubland on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate from 150-1,300 m asl.

Threats

This species does not seem globally threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by actual mining activities (Koniambo (KNS), Kopéto (SLN) and Kouaoua (SLN)) and potential future mining impacts at Boulinda.

Conservation

S. macrocarpa is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in six protected areas: Mont Mou, Haute Yaté, Parc de la Rivière Bleue, Mont Do, montagne des sources and Plaines des Lacs. This species should be collected more, and genetic studies are suggested in order to facilitate species identification within this genus.
