Description
Exoperidium: breaking in to 6 - 10 short rays, but only the top third splits, the remaining two thirds forming a cup; 30 - 60 mm diameter; rays whitish, overlain with scurfy ochraceous material; binding substrate.
Stipe: absent.
Endoperidium: globose; 10 - 20 mm; scurfy velutinate, matt; dark grey to sepia.
Peristome: small, fibrous, without a clearly defined edge.
Flesh: thin to medium.
Spore print: brown ochraceous.

Notes: this earthstar is recognised by its cup like exoperidium where only the uppermost one third splits in to rays and a sessile dark grey scurfy endoperidium with a poorly defined fibrose peristome.
