Description

Exoperidium: buff to bay brown; breaking in to 5 - 8 more or less equal rays, only slightly recurved; not trapping debris; 30 - 110 mm diameter; rays rimose (cracking), pinkish brown when fresh; mostly with a secondary collar between the endo and exo peridiums.

Stipe: absent; attached by a rhizomorph.

Endoperidium: globose; sessile; 15 - 30 mm; glabrous, smooth or finely pitted; bay brown or grey brown grey.

Peristome: raised, fibrous; clearly defined edge; darker than endoperidium.  

Flesh: thick.

Spore print: brown ochraceous.

Notes: this earthstar is recognised by its relative large size, grey to bay brown and sessile endoperidium and pinkish brown rays. Sometimes with a distinctive collar. Some mycologists consider that this is the same as G. indicum which lacks the intermediate collar between the exoperidium and the endoperidium.
