Description
Fruit body: open-lattice cage; 50 - 100 mm diameter; the arms are joined to create a cage-like structure with rounded polygonal spaces in the net; the outer surface is typically smooth or slightly wrinkled and the inner surface is usually more roughly corrugated across the width. Internally the arms consist of thick walled tubes.
Egg: dingy white, up to 30 mm diameter. The egg remnants become a whitish volva as the fruiting body emerges.
Stipe: absent.
Flesh: brittle and spongy.
Gleba (Spore mass): olive-brown or chocolate brown, thick and slimy, carried on the inner surface of the arms.
Smell: foetid, of rotting meat or faeces.
Spores:
Notes: this cage fungus is recognised by its form and white colour. Although this has been named as I. gracile in New Caledonia, it has some features of I. cibarium. More information is needed to confirm its identity.
