Pileus: convex with a distinct central depression and umbo; 30 – 90 mm diameter; velutinous to finely fibrillose; dry; strong violet with a yellow brown umbo.

Stipe: cylindrical; 30 – 90 × 12 –20 mm; fibrillose;strong violet matches pileus.

Gills: adnate; moderately spaced; pale violet; lamellulae in two series.

Flesh: violaceous.

Spore print: white.

Spores: not observed.

Notes: this fungus is mainly distinguished by its strong violet colours in the cap, gills and stipe. Recent sequencing studies have cast doubt over the genus Lepista and suggested placing some species in Clitocybe, but the matter is not settled and the name Lepista is widely quoted in the literature so it is retained here.
