Description
Fruit body: pyriform (pear shaped); 30 - 100 mm tall, 30 - 90 mm diameter;grey brown; outer surface with short pyramidaldark brown warts;rubbing off to leave a pale polygonal pattern in older specimens. Inner wall opens by a pore to release the spores.
Stipe: cylindrical, expanding at apex in to the main fruiting body; tan to brown; with warts but fewer than on the upper surface.
Flesh: thin, white.
Gleba (Spore mass): olive-brown at maturity; flesh in stem white and spongy.

Notes: this puffball is recognised by its pyriforme (pear shaped) fruit body, grey brown colour and with a distinct stem and small pyramidal dark warts. It is always growing on wood. Common in forests with fallen timber, it has a global distribution.
