Description
Fruit body: subglobose;20 - 40 mm tall, 20 - 40 mm diameter;greyishblue, greyish purple, fading to white on the underside; outer surface appears velutinous but under a lens it is seen to be made up from minute spines; inner wall opens by a pore to release the spores.
Stipe: not really distinct, conspicuous white rhizoids attach the fruiting body to the substrate.
Flesh: white.
Gleba (Spore mass): olive-brown at maturity; flesh in base thin, white and firm.

Notes: this puffball is recognised by its blue grey colours. It grows on wood. (Note the specimens in the photograph have been removed and placed on the ground.). Morganella purpurascens has been moved to Lycoperdon and back again by different authors.
