Fruiting body: cylindric fusoid, club shaped; 50 –100 mm tall, 20 – 40 mm wide; minutely roughened, matt; black.

Stipe: short cylindrical, compressed; black; insititious.

Flesh: tough, whitish.

Notes: this Xylaria is quite large, club like and grows on wood. It does not readily fit any of the descriptions available for New Caledonian species.Possibly X. schweinitzii.
