Description

Pileus: convex to umbonate or campanulate; 4 - 30 mm diameter; densely covered in pointed squamules; dry, grey to dark brown with contrasting pale squamules.

Stipe: cylindrical; 5 - 40 × 1 - 3 mm; grey, paler than cap; pruinose to floccose.

Gills: adnate or adnexed; grey at first turning pale blue, eventually dark brown.

Flesh: grey.

Spore print: dark brown.

Spores: phaeseoliform, mitriform; 6 - 7.5 × 5 - 6 µm; smooth, with an apical pore.  

Notes: this fungus is characterized by the erect squamules on the cap, gills that are grey but turn blue, and confirmed by the odd shape of the spores. It has a very odd distribution across the Pacific from Japan to New Zealand and Northern Australia to Argentina.
