Description
Pileus: convex to conical; up to 50 mm diameter; dry; fibrillose, deep blue becoming brownish green when old; margin striate.
Stipe: cylindrical; 30 - 100 × 2.5 - 5 mm; dry; fibrillose, twisted; blueish like pileus but often white at the base.
Gills: adnexed to almost free; crowded; cream, grey to blue, turning pink with a crenulate edge.
Flesh: blue beneath the cuticle, whitish elsewhere.
Spore print: pink.
Spores: cuboid to tetrahedral; 7.5 - 10 µm; smooth.
Notes: this fungus is very difficult to recognize and separate from E. virescens as Horak demonstrates in his 1976 key. It is taller with a more robust stipe and a more blueish colour when young, but these are very subjective characters. Noordeloos says they can be distinguished by the shape of the cheilocystidia: fusoid in E. virescens and cylindrical in
E. altissimum.
