Description

Pileus: convex to planoconvex with a central depression: 20 – 70 mm; densely covered in semi erect squamules; dry; pinkish purple at first becoming brown with tops of squamules paler; margin inrolled when young and long remaining so.

Stipe: clavate; 10 –70× 3 – 8 mm; hispid, squamulose; brown with tops of squamules paler.

Gills: deeply decurrent; crowded; very narrow; brown sometimes with a violet tinge; edge with lamellulae in two series.

Flesh: thin, tough.

Spore print: white.

Spores: cylindric; 6 – 8.5 × 3 – 4μm.

Notes: this fungus grows on dry logs and is densely hairy and pink or violaceous when young, but quickly becomes brown. Described by Pegler and others in the genus Panus.
