Leratiomyces similis (Pat.) Bresinsky & Binder

Red List Status -

Description

Pileus: secotoid, globose to pyriform, lobed; 20 – 30 mm diameter; glabrous; slightly viscid; orange red.

Stipe: present, tapering, inserted only in base of the gleba, hollow; 10 –15× 2 –4 mm; glabrous to pruinose; pale reddish orange.

Hymenium: loculate with smallreddish locules.

Flesh: firm, reddish.

Spore print: not observed but Patouillard says it is pale!

Spores: ellipsoid; 10 – 12 × 6 –8 µm.

Notes: this fungus is mainly distinguished by its red secotoid cap and pale orange reddish hollow stipe which is inserted only 3 mm into the gleba. Recent sequencing studies have placed this species in Leratiomyces. Redhead & McNeill have confirmed the validity of the name and it is the type species for the genus. Bridge et al suggested it could be conspecific with L. erythrocephalus but did not synonymize the two. Patouillard detailed the differences.
