Description


Fruit body: subglobose or pyriform;15 - 40 mm tall, 20 - 40 mm diameter; greyish brown; outer surface with strong brown spines, crowded at apex; rubbing off to leave a reticulate pattern in older specimens. Inner wall opens by a pore to release the spores.

Stipe: not really distinct in most specimens but occasionally defined (top right) to form a pyriform fruit body.

Flesh: thin, white.

Gleba (Spore mass): olive-brown at maturity; flesh in stem white and spongy.

Notes: this puffball is not easily recognised. More information on its microscopic characters are needed to determine if its identity. This might be L. compactum.
