Description
Cap: centrally depressed;20-50 mm diameter; radially fibrillose; fibrils blue grey on a paler grey background; margin inrolled.
Stipe: clavate, expanding downwards;30 - 55 × 5–8 mm; fibrillose;blue grey.
Gills: deeply decurrent; anastomizing (splitting) near margin; pink ochraceous becoming brownish at maturity.
Spore print: rusty brown.
Spores: ellipsoid; 9.5 – 11.5 × 5 – 6 µm, thick walled.
Notes: this Paxillus is characterized by its blue grey fibrillose cap and stipe, deeply decurrent anastomizing pink ochraceous gills and its habitat under Nothofagus. Sequencing suggests that it is not in genus Paxillus and needs to be moved, possibly to Austropaxillus or to a new genus.
