Description

Fruiting body: finger like, club shaped; 30 –80 mm tall, 10 – 30 mm wide; finely roughened, matt; dark grey to black.

Stipe: short cylindrical stalk; black; insititious.

Flesh: tough, whitish.

Spore print: black?

Notes: this Xylaria is quite large, finger like and grows in groups on wood. Patouillard cites the first record being found at Bourail in 1888.
