Description

Description

Pileus: convex; 50 - 95 mm diameter; glabrous; greyish brown becoming black and splitting radially.

Stipe: cylindrical with a sub-bulbous base; 35 - 80 × 5 - 15 mm; white above, brown below; glabrous; large pendulous ring near apex.

Gills: free; white to reddish brown to start with, becoming brown.

Flesh: bright yellow in base of stipe when exposed to air.

Spore print: dark brown.

Notes: the yellow reaction in the stem and the strong smell of phenol place this in the ‘xanthodermae’ group of Agaricus that can cause serious illness if consumed.
