Description
Cap: perennial bracket, ungulate with no clear distinction between cap and stipe; 40 - 70 mm diameter, 120 – 180 mm height; almost smooth with concentric rings; resinous, laccate; black with some reddish brown zones, margin more or less blunt.
Stipe: not clearly differentiated.
Pores: white to cream; round; pore surface flat and horizontal to the ground.
Flesh: hard, corky; pale brown, paler in tubes.
Spore print: reddish brown.

Notes: This fungus is recognized by its elongated, largely black laccate fruiting body with no clear differentiation between cap and stipe. Further macroscopic and microscopic details are required to confirm a diagnosis to species.
