Tristaniopsis guillainii is an endemic shrub or small tree from New Caledonia. Represented by two infraspecific varieties, it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. This species occurs in shrubland and humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,200 m asl. This species is quite common and locally abundant and does not seem threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are equal to 11,199 and 376 km², respectively. Therefore T. guillainii is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area

T. guillainii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, from Prony to Poum.

Population

Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that the species is quite common and abundant.

Habitat

T. guillainii occurs in shrubland and humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,200 m asl.

Threats

This abundant species does not seem to be threatened at the moment, although some subpopulations may be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires or mining activities (Goro (Vale), Tiébaghi (SLN), Vulcain (SMGM), Nakéty (SMT), Koniambo (KNS)).

Conservation

T. guillainii is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in three protected areas: Mont Do, Barrage de Yaté et Chutes de la Madeleine. Besides, myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii) infections have been observed ex situ, so monitoring should occur in the wild in that regard.
