Polyscias balansae is an endemic small tree of New Caledonia spread in Grande Terre from Colnett in the north to Dzumac in the south. It occurs in altitudinal shrubland and forest on various substrates (650- 1,000 m asl). This species does not seem directly threatened. Polyscias balansae is considered Least Concern (LC).

Polyscias balansae is not protected by local legislation. It occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié
