Nephrodesmus sericeus is an endemic shrub (1-2 m high) from New Caledonia. It is restricted to the northwestern part of Grande Terre, from Boulinda (southern limit) to Poum (upper limit). This species grows in scrubland on serpentine substrate between 100 and 1,200 m asl. This species is quite common. It does not seem globally threatened although some subpopulations can be impacted by bushfires and indirectly by mining activities (soil erosion, road construction). Its Area of Occupancy (AOO) and Extent of Occurrence (EOO) are estimated to be 156 and 1,034 km²respectively, and its number of locations estimated to be over 10. Therefore, Nephrodesmus sericeus is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with an estimated decline of all the concerned sub-criteria.
Geographical area
Nephrodesmus sericeus is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the north west part of Grande Terre, from Boulinda (southern limit) to Poum (upper limit).
Population
The population size is not known. Field prospections indicate that the species is quite common.
Habitat
Nephrodesmus sericeus grows in scrubland on serpentine substrate between 100 and 1,200 m asl.
Threats
It does not seem threatened although some subpopulations can be impacted by bushfires and indirectly by mining activities (soil erosion, road construction).
Conservation
Nephrodesmus sericeus is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected areas.
