Dendrobium muricatum is an endemic epiphyt orchid of New Caledonia widespread on the whole Grande Terre. D. murictaum occurs in dense humid forest at an altitudinal range 300-1200 m asl. With an area of occupancy and an extent of occurrence equal to 172 and 7,926 km²respectively, D. muricatum qualifies as Least Concern.

Total population size is unknown but field observations report a quite high density by hectare.

Habitat


D. murictaum occurs in dense humid forest at an altitudinal range 300-1200 m asl.

Threats


Main threats to D. muricatum are gathering pressure (more important in past than nowadays) and for Dogny locality plant bugs (observation of E. Faria).

Conservation


D. muricatum is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud. D. muricatum occurs in several protected areas : Parc des Grandes Fougères , réserve de nature sauvage du Mont Panié, Réserve de nature sauvage du massif de l’Aoupinié, réserve naturelle de la forêt de Saille, réserve naturelle du Mont Mou, Parc provincial de la Rivière Bleue, réserve naturelle de la Vallée de la Thy.
