Endangered (EN) , assessed in 28/11/2018

Hymenophyllum rolandiprincipis is an endemic epiphytic fern on tree's trunck from New Caledonia where it is only known from two summits in the northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre. It occurs in high altitude from 900 and 1,550 m asl. Known from two localities, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated to be 16 and 16 km², respectively. The main threat is posed by invasive species, causing habitat degradation. Therefore H. rolandiprincipis is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab (iii)+B2ab(iii).

Geographical area

Hymenophyllum rolandiprincipis is endemic to New Caledonia where it is only known from two summits in the northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre: Colnett and Mont Panié.

Population

Population size is unknown. Field surveys emphasize a locally abundant species.

Habitat

Hymenophyllum rolandiprincipis is an epiphytic fern on tree's trunk, which occurs in dense humid forest from 900 to 1,550 m asl.

Threats

The main threats identified are invasive species (Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)) which contribute to the decline of habitat quality.

Conservation

Hymenophyllum rolandiprincipis is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in one protected area: Mont Panié. Prospection at Mt. Panié and Colnett is needed to collect more herbarium material and better estimate its population size and a search of this species at Ignambi is also recommended.
