Polyphlebium vieillardii is an epiphytic fern mainly on tree fern (Leptopteris wilkesiana) and on palm tree's trunk bases, endemic of New Caledonia. This species is widely distributed from south to the north east of Grande Terre. It is a common and an abundant species that occurs in dense humid forest up to 1,500 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 5,033 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 96 km², P. vieillardii is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Polyphlebium vieillardii is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed in Grande Terre, from Koghis in the south to Haute Diahot in the north east.
Population
Population size is unknown. Nevertheless P. vieillardii is particularly abundant in humid areas.
Habitat
Polyphlebium vieillardii is an epiphytic fern mainly on tree fern (Leptopteris wilkesiana) and on palm tree's trunk bases which occurs on dense humid forest from 400 to 1,200 m asl.
Threats
There is no threat identified.
Conservation
Polyphlebium vieillardii is not protected by legislation however it does occur in six protected areas: Parc des Grandes Fougères, Côte Oubliée, Montagne des sources, Mont Panié, Pic Ningua, Vallée de la Thy.
