Pancheria communis is an endemic shrub of the south of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It is found mainly in wetlands at low altitude on ultramafic substrate. The main threats impacting this species comes from habitat fragmentation caused by bushfires and mining activities. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being estimated respectively to 68 and 488 km², Pancheria communis is considered Vulnerable (VU) using criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) with an estimation of 9 locations and an estimated decline of all sub-criteria.

Geographical area


Pancheria communis is restricted to the south of Grande Terre in the Plaine des Lacs area and around Yaté, with a single collect in Montagne des Sources.

Population


This species can be locally abundant. It is known from 5-7 sub-populations.

Habitat


It is found mainly in wetlands at low altitude (0-250 m asl) on ultramafic substrate, occasionnaly in forest close to riverbanks.

Threats


The main threats impacting this species comes from habitat fragmentation caused by bushfires and mining activities. This species can regenerate after a fire.

Conservation


Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in numerous protected areas : Haute Yaté, Montagne des sources, Netcha, Rivière bleue. Protecting the wetlands of plaine des Lacs recently recognized by RAMSAR through a management plan would be benefic to this species. This species can be used for riverbanks restoration.
