Elaeocarpus nodosus is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, where it is distributed in the northwestern massifs of Grande Terre. It occurs in in shrubland on ultramafic soil between 100 and 800 m asl. Known from 7 locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 1,499 and 64 km², respectively. The main threats are bushfires and mining activities. Therefore, E. nodosus is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+B2ab(i,ii,iii,v).
Geographical area
E. nodosus is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is distributed in the northwestern massifs of Grande Terre: Boulinda, Tiéa, Ouatendé, Koniambo, Katépahié, Tiébaghi, Poum.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
E. nodosus occurs in shrubland ('maquis') on ultramafic soil between 100 and 800 m asl.
Threats
The main threats are bushfires and mining activities at Tiébaghi and Poum (SLN).
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord, but does not occur in any protected areas. The local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort should be informed about the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Finally, further prospection on other northwestern massifs is encouraged (Taom, Ouazangou, Kaala).
