Gmelina neocaledonica is an endemic monocaulous shrub of New Caledonia distributed in the south part of Grande Terre, from the far south to the Tontouta-Thio area (the upper limit). This species occurs in forests and maquis on ultramafic substrate between 40 and 850 m asl. This species is very common and it does not seem to be threatened. Despite an Area of Occupancy (AOO) and an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 140 and 2,012 km², respectively, Gmelina neocaledonica is not thought to approach the requirements for listing as threatened. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Gmelina neocaledonica is endemic to New Caledonia where it is distributed in the south part of Grande Terre, from the far south to the Tontouta-Thio area (the upper limit).
Population
The population size is not known. Field observations indicate that this species is very common.
Habitat
Gmelina neocaledonica occurs in forests and maquis on ultramafic substrate between 40 and 850 m asl.
Threats
This species is very common and it does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Gmelina neocaledonica is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in several protected areas : Foret Nord, Pic du Pin, Rivière bleue, Haute Pourina, Barrage de Yaté, Côte Oubliée, Chutes de la Madeleine.
