Psychotria canalensis is an endemic shrub or small tree, widespread in the Grande Terre moutain range from Hienghène (Poami) in the north to Boulouparis (Pic Ouitchambo) in the south of New Caledonia. Psychotria canalensis occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitudinal range 20-700 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Psychotria canalensis is considered Least Concern (LC).

Threats
This species does not seem directly threatened. However invasive species such as rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and busfires remain potential threats to this species.
