It is found in dense humid forest on a volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitude of 400-800 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. A. macrocarpus is considered Least Concern (LC).

Acropogon macrocarpus is an endemic tree of the central part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. From herbarium samples and field observations, the following sub-populations are known : Aoupinié, MtArago et Poami, Tchamba, Ponandou, Canala, Ouhat, massif du Panié, Mandjélia...
Population
This species is locally abundant. Natural regeneration has been observed.
Habitat
This species is found in dense humid forest on a volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitude of 400-800 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem directly threatened.
Conservation
Protected species by legislation in Province Nord, A. macrocarpus also found in the reserves de nature sauvage de l'Aoupinié et du massif du Panié.
