Pichonia balansae is an endemic shrub or tree up to 4 m tall, found along the east coast of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. P. balansae occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 10-800 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Pichonia balansae is considered Least Concern (LC).

Population size is unknown.

Habitat


Pichonia balansae is found in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 10-800 m asl.

Threats


Some subpopulations may be threatened by potential hydroelectric development and mining activities. However, this species does not seem globally threatened.

Conservation


Unprotected species by legislation, Pichonia balansae is found in four protected areas (Réserve naturelle du Massif du Kouakoué, Réserve naturelle de la forêt de Saille, Réserve naturelle de la Fausse Yaté, Réserve naturelle du Barrage de Yaté).
