Pycnandra sp. nov. "nervures étroites" is an endemic new species restricted to the south of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is found in humid forest on an ultramafic substrate at an altitude range of 300 and 800 m asl. Pycnandra sp. nov. "nervures étroites" is known from six localities and its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 1,554 and 28 km², respectively. The main threat is posed by bushfires and mining activities causing habitat quality degradation. Therefore Pycnandra sp. nov. "nervures étroites" is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(ii,iii,v)+B2ab(ii,iii,v) with a decline of the Area of occupancy (AOO), of the quality of habitat and of the number of mature individuals.

Pycnandra sp. nov. "nervures étroites" is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre.

Conservation


Pycnandra sp. nov. "nervures étroites" is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in three protected areas: Haute Yaté, Foret Nord and Rivière bleue. This species should be included in the regional legislation for a better protection of the species. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services), responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort, on the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Furthermore, it is recommanded to realise field surveys in order to better protect the species.
