Phyllanthus favieri var. kaalaensis is endemic to New Caledonia, only known from Mont Kaala, in north west of Grande Terre. It occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate between 600 and 1,050 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated to be 16 km² and 16 km², and it is known from a single location. The main threats include ongoing mining activites and bushfires. Therefore P. favieri var. kaalaensis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) with criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v).
Geographical area
P. favieri var. kaalaensis is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is only known from Mont Kaala, in the north west of Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
P. favieri var. kaalaensis occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate between 600 and 1,050 m asl.
Threats
The main threats are ongoing mining activites on Mont Kaala as well as bushfires.
Conservation
P. favieri var. kaalaensis is protected by legislation in Province Nord, but does not occur in any protected areas. This species is cultivated at the IAC (Institut Agronomique de Nouvelle-Calédonie) nursery of Saint-Louis. However it is difficult to obtain viable seeds. Therefore a project to reintroduce the species in its natural habitats is actually in studies. It is recommended to monitor and preserve known populations in delimited areas and to inform the local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort about the presence of the taxon in the concerned areas.
