Endangered (EN) , assessed in 20/07/2022

Citronella sp.nov. Munzinger 7467 is an endemic species from New Caledonia, This species is known from four subpopulations : Kopeto, Boulinda, Paéoau and Poro. It is found in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 500-520 m asl. The main threats are on-going mining activities impact some subpopulations. Indeed, extraction projections on the coming 25 years will lead to the decline of populations, especially in Kopeto (SLN). This species is also threatened by bushfires at Boulinda and Poro. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated to be of 387 and 20 km² while the number of locations is estimated to be four. This species is therefore assessed as Endangered (EN) with criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v) with a continuing decline of all concerned sub- criteria.

Conservation

Citronella sp.nov. Munzinger 7467 is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected area. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services) on the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Searches in the nearby areas of Kouaoua and Poro/Kopéto/Boulinda are needed in order to better estimate its population and threats. This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed to monitor the populations and to preserve a viable population within delimited perimeters on the mining area.
