Astelia neocaledonica is an endemic perennial plant from New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. It occurs in mid and high elevation dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrates, from 500 to 1,500 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 8,493 and 140 km², respectively, and it does not seem to be currently threatened. Therefore, A. neocaledonica is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


A. neocaledonica is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, from the Thy valley (Mont-Dore) to Mt. Mandjélia (Pouébo).

Population


Total population size is unknown.

Habitat


A. neocaledonica occurs in mid and high elevation dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrates, from 500 to 1,500 m asl.

Threats


Some subpopluations might be impacted by bushfires or mining activities, but this species is very common and does not appear to be threatened at the moment.

Conservation


This species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in numerous protected areas: the Mt. Panié, Aoupinié, Mt. Do, Forêt de Saille, Mt. Humboldt, massif du Kouakoué, Mt. Mou, Montagne des Sources and Vallée de la Thy natural reserves, as well as the Côte Oubliée provincial park.
