Description
Pileus: infundibuliform, concave with a deep central depression; 100 – 130 mm diameter; glabous becoming rimose; dry; fawn..
Stipe: cylindrical; 50 – 70 × 12 –20 mm; fibrillose; blotched fawn and white.
Gills: decurrent; crowded; brown; lamellulae in two series.
Flesh: violaceous.
Spore print: white.

Notes: this fungus is mainly distinguished by its strong violet colours in the cap, gills and stipe. Recent sequencing studies have cast doubt over the genus Lepista and suggested placing some species in Clitocybe, but the matter is not settled and the name Lepista is widely quoted in the literature so it is retained here.
