Amanita ochrophylla (Cooke & Massee) Cleland

Description

Pileus: plano-convex; 50 -150 mm diameter; smooth, dry; orange buff; with velar remnants as broad flattish scales grouped near the centre, slightly darker than cap.


Stipe: cylindrical with a large turbinate base; 55 – 150 × 15 – 30 mm; glabrous, but somewhat fibrous on the bulb; white to ochraceous buff; with a double ring, upper ring small, pendulous, ochraceous buff, lower ring thicker, often lost.


Gills: free; thin, crowded; becoming ochraceous buff, with one or two sets of lamellulae.


Flesh: thick, white, unchanging.


Smell: nil or sickly sweet like A. nauseosa.


Spore print: white.


Spores: ellipsoid to elongate ellipsoid; 9 – 10.5 × 5.5 – 7.5 µm, Q = 1.56  ± 0.12; strongly amyloid.


Notes: large orange buff Amanita, with turbinate base and two rings on stipe.
