Description
Commonly called pearl oyster. Has the ability to produce the widest range of internal color coloration of Pinctada species. Used industrially to produce pearls in several countries (French Polynesia, Australia, etc.).
Found in New Caledonia between 0 (on plateaus, resist on solar exposure) and 60m.
The mantle (biomineralizing tissue) is most often black, but an orange chromatic variant (called "Ora" in Polynesian) is found regularly in our waters.
