Pandanus lacuum is an endemic tree of New Caledonia, with a discontinuous distribution: Thio and the south of Grande Terre. P. lacuum occurs in humid forest on ultramafic soils from 20 to 400 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) is equal to 96 km² for an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 737 km² and the number of locations is estimated at five. The combined threats of fires and the major threat of mining activities, allows us to infer a continuous decline of AOO, EOO, quality of habitat, number of locations and number of mature individuals. Using criteria B, P. lacuum qualifies for Endangered (EN) B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v).

Population size is unknown.
Habitat
P. lacuum occurs in humid forest on ultramafic soils from 20 to 400 m asl.
Threats
The main threats identified are fire and on-going mining activities of Goro (Vale NC).
Conservation
Pandanus lacuum is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud and it occurs in three protected areas: Pic du Pin, Fausse Yaté and Barrage de Yaté. This species is part of a rescue program (Rare species conservation plan), implemented by the mining company Vale NC: some plantlets have already been planted in the Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue as well as the Cap N'Dua botanical reserve. It is recommended to carry on efforts to save this species i.e. ex-situ conservation, population monitoring and protection.
