Dedea oreophila Schltr.

Red List Status -

Endangered (EN) , assessed in 26/10/2018

Quintinia oreophila is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to three summits in the south of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate from 800 to 1,600 m asl. This species is threatened by bushfires degrading its habitat. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 233 and 96 km², respectively, and the number of locations is estimated to be three. Therefore, Q. oreophila is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area

This species is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to three summits of the south of Grande Terre: Mt. Humboldt, Mt. Kouakoué and Montagne des Sources.

Population size is unknown.

This species is found in high elevation shrubland or dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate from 900 to 1,600 m asl.

The main threat to this species is bushfires, particularly on Montagne des Sources. A large anthropogenic fire has already impacted this site in 2005, and another one got extremely close in 2019.

Q. oreophila is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in three protected areas: Montagne des Sources, Mt. Kouakoué and Mt. Humboldt natural reserves. This species would benefit from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed that monitoring should occur to ensure the persistence of known subpopulations. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (government department overseeing firefighting actions) on the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
