Lepturopetium kuniense

Data Deficient (DD) , assessed in 24/10/2017Lepturopetium kuniense is a very rare grass endemic to New Caledonia. It was discovered by Schmid in 1951 on Ile des Pins, and has not been observed since. This species is listed as Data Deficient (DD) because of the lack of observations. Prospections are highly recommended to find this species.
Geographical area
L. kuniense is endemic to New Caledonia where it is only known from Baie de la Corbeille on Ile des Pins, where it was discovered by Schmid in 1951.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
L. kuniense has been observed and collected only once, among littoral vegetation on calcareous substrate.
Threats
Threats to this species are unknown, but more generally, this type of littoral vegetation could be moderately impacted by feral goats and stomping.
Conservation
L. kuniense is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and doesn't occur in any protected areas. Since this species has not been seen since 1951, it should be sought after on Ile des Pins. If found, it is recommended to take in situ and ex situ conservation measures. It is recommended to inform the local Management Committee on the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
