Planchonella cinerea is an endemic tree of New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed on the west coast Grande Terre, as well as numerous islets, the Isle of Pines and the Bélep Islands. It occurs in dry tropical or coastal forest and shrubland on calcareous or sedimentary substrate under 100 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 49,948 and 232 km², respectively. Therefore, P. cinerea is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


P. cinerea is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed on the west coast of Grande Terre, from the Greater Nouméa area to Pouembout, as well as numerous islets, the Isle of Pines (île des Pins) and the Bélep Islands.

Population


Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is common.

Habitat


This tree grows in dry tropical or coastal forest on calcareous or sedimentary substrate under 100 m asl.

Threats


Although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires, this species does not appear to be threatened.

Conservation


P. cinerea is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in several protected areas: île Leprédour and Yves Merlet natural reserves, as well as Parc zoologique et forestier Michel Corbasson and Parc municipal du Ouen Toro in Nouméa.
