Stenocarpus heterophyllus is an endemic shrub restricted to south of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is known of 2 subpopulations (Plum and Dumbéa). It is found in shrubland on an ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 30-300 m asl. Recurrent bushfires, urbanization and over-stamping contribute to the degradation and loss of the habitat. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated to be of 22 km² and 8 km² with an estimation of 2 locations. Stenocarpus heterophyllus is therefore assessed as Endangered (EN) with criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with a continuing decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

Geographical area

Stenocarpus heterophyllus is an endemic shrub restricted to south of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is known of 2 subpopulations (Plum and Dumbéa).

Population

This species is found as scattered individuals.

Habitat

It is found in shrubland on an ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 30-200 m asl.

Threats

Recurrent bushfires, urbanization and over-stamping (in Plum and Dumbéa)contribute to the degradation and loss of the habitat.

Conservation

Stenocarpus heterophyllus is protected by the code de l'environnement of province Nord and province Sud. It occurs in one protected area : parc provincial de la Haute-Dumbéa. This species would benefit of in-situ and ex-situ conservation measures : population follow-up and designing appropriate measures of protection within the management plan of parc provincial de la Haute-Dumbéa.
